With hundreds of characters, swordplay and sorcery, personal drama, and political intrigue, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is fantastic source material for strategy games and RPGs. The conclusion of HBO's Game of Thrones is nearly upon us (and presumably, at some point, we might actually see the next book in the series as well), so it feels like the perfect time for a roundup of mods that bring Martin's world to PC games.
Crusader Kings 2—A Game of Thrones
It's hard to find a better match between game and mod than Crusader Kings 2 and the full-conversion A Game of Thrones mod. It transforms CK2's medieval Europe into the continent of Westeros. With random events and your own decisions quickly entangling the characters you know and love (or hate), your game will quickly veer from the story you remember into a kind of bizarro-world fan-fiction.
We've written a few times about our experiences using the mod, with Rich McCormick playing as Ned Stark in Surviving Westeros, and my diary about playing as Littlefinger's next-door neighbor, Game of Checkers.
Mount and Blade: Warband—A Clash of Kings
Rather than playing as one of the main characters, you can get a view of the drama in Westeros from ground level with the A Clash of Kings mod for Mount and Blade: Warband. The mod adds thousands of custom items, naval battles, and a huge map of Westeros, plus plenty of notable figures from the fiction.
I made an attempt to align myself with both the Lannisters and Baratheons and had a nasty encounter with Gregor Clegane in my write-up of the mod here.
Minecraft—Westeroscraft
Westeroscraft is a Minecraft server with its own custom launcher and mod suite. While it someday hopes to become an open world MMORPG, it's currently in build mode, creating Westeros (and someday Essos) in blocks. And it looks spectacular so far. Anyone can join and explore the world but if you want to help build it, you'll need to apply here.
Civilization 5—A Mod of Ice and Fire
This is one of our favorite mods for Civ 5—it adds a sprawling map of Westeros and lets you play as a number of civs and leaders, like Robb Stark in The North, Stannis Baratheon in The Stormlands, Daenerys, of course, and even Mance Rayder of the Free Folk. Each civ has a unique trait plus special units and buildings.
Civilization 6—A Civ of Ice and Fire
Play Civ 6 as the Starks, Boltons, Greyjoys, Baratheons, Targaryens, and even The Night King representing the White Walkers. Maps cover both Westeros and Essos, and wonders include Casterly Rock, The Red Keep, the Titan of Braavos, and more. There's support for the Gathering Storm expansion as well (and it's required to play as the Night King).
Total War: Attila—Seven Kingdoms
This total conversion for Total War: Attila delivers over two dozen playable armies you can use to recreate the fiction's massive historical battles, plus it adds scores of recognizable characters from the HBO show.
Medieval 2: Total War: Kingdoms—Westeros: Age of Petty Kings
Rather than taking place amidst the current events of Game of Thrones, the Age of Petty Kings mod takes place a thousand years prior, though it's still based on George R.R. Martin's lore.
Ages of Empires 2: HD Edition—War of the Five Kings
This scenario for Age of Empires 2 recreates the devastating civil war in Westeros following the death of King Robert. Eight players can join the fray as the Greyjoys, Starks, Tyrells, both Baratheons, and the other major factions in the War of the Five Kings.
Skyrim—The Game of Thrones Adaptation
You can't play it yet—it's currently between versions, with the older version having been taken down ahead of the release of a new beta—but this is definitely one to bookmark. It's an overhaul that plans to transform Skyrim into Westeros, with dozens of locations and characters from the fiction and custom quests. Ambitious, to be sure, and there's no mention of a release date at the moment.
While you wait, you can check out a trailer below, which is already looking pretty great.
Given the variety of kings, factions and political intrigue throughout the world of The Witcher, it’s only right that its universe be paired with a game that enables Machiavellian-style warfare.
The Witcher Kings is a total conversion for Crusader Kings 2 that’s compatible with the latest version of CK2, as of two days ago. (It’s also available through the Steam Workshop, if that’s easier.)
It’s pretty straightforward: it turns the Paradox grand strategy game into a battle of international politics, warfare and diplomacy with all the Witcher characters you know and love. The mod itself is set in 1274 and concentrates largely on the events in The Witcher 2, rather than Geralt’s most recent adventure.

For added immersion, you can combine this mod with the Witcher 3 Music for CK2 mod, which is also on the Steam Workshop. But if you just want to start planning your wedding to Geralt and taking over Redania, head to the Witcher Kings listing here.

The confusing, fascinating historical strategy game Crusader Kings 2 is free on Steam until Saturday. If you picked it up, here are a few tips to get you started.
Play The Learning Scenario
The most intimidating thing about Crusader Kings 2 is the user interface. There’s a lot of stuff on screen, and none of it is explained. When you open up the game for the first time, you have the option to play the Learning Scenario. This is optional, but don’t skip it. It is the only time the game will outright explain what a lot of the buttons do, and you’ll have a chance to see what it’s like to fight a war and gain new territory. It’s important to know how to do that stuff, because you’re going to be doing it a lot. I also found it helpful to keep the beginner’s guide from the Crusader Kings 2 fan wiki open, just so I had a checklist of things to try out as I began to explore the game.
Make Your Own Objectives
Ostensibly the goal of Crusader Kings 2 is to grow your empire and gain more territory. When you’re just starting out, navigating the medieval politics can be pretty confusing and it’s easy to get discouraged. Instead of making it your ambition to be King of France, start smaller. Pick a random noble in a random country and see if you can pursue a random goal single-mindedly. Once I played with the objective of changing my succession to be matrilineal. My subjects and my children didn’t love this, so it started a long chain of assassination attempts and dastardly plots. The wider world and its politics didn’t matter as much, and I got more familiar with the systems of the game while I snuffed out my male heirs one by one.

Get To Know Your Friends And Relatives
In this game you have a court of subjects who have control over smaller parts of your domain. By clicking on their portraits, you can learn about how they feel about you, their ambitions, their relatives and their backgrounds. It’s a good idea to check on how your vassals feel about you periodically. It can also be really fun, as you’ll learn things about these characters you might otherwise miss. Which one of your cousins harbors a secret grudge against you? Who hates you now that you changed succession to Elective Gavelkind? Who in your kingdom is inbred? Knowing more about these characters’ dispositions makes it easier to be invested in boosting them up or fucking them over.

Don’t Worry About “Losing”
The characters you play as will die pretty young, and a lot of them will die before doing anything substantial. Don’t worry about it--Crusader Kings 2 is about the long game. Some of my favorite games of Crusader Kings 2 only started getting interesting after the character I was initially playing died. Suddenly, there was a long chain of conspiracies and factions scrambling for power when my heir was still a child and more easily murdered. I’ll never forget when I had to imprison my heir’s own mother for trying to assassinate her son. This game is brutal.

Try Some Mods
Historical kings and queens making your eyes glaze over? Maybe you’d find the game easier to play if it was a post-apocalypse United States. Or maybe you’d prefer playing in Westeros. The Crusader Kings 2 modding community is vibrant, and adding a bit of fantasy can really open up the gameplay in this esoteric game. Hell, when I added a sexy mod with vampires and, inexplicably, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, I re-ignited my excitement for the game. If a total conversion mod isn’t for you, players have also added mods to make the game even more historically accurate, like this one that overhauls the Jewish characters in the game, adding Jewish holidays like Yom Kippur and sects like Chasidism. Crusader Kings 2 feels impenetrable at first, but it’s actually a wide open sandbox of fascinating gameplay experiences—go find one that’s fun for you.

In a surprise move, Paradox has made its grand strategy game Crusader Kings II free on Steam for a limited period of time. The announcement comes by way of Paradox’s community manager in the studio’s official forums, and ties into a Steam news item which details the free period as ending at 10AM PST this Saturday.
If you add Crusader Kings II to your Steam account during this window, you’ll keep the base game forever. Additionally, the game’s DLC is 50% off as another part of a weekend deal on Steam; after the free period ends, the game itself will be 75% off for the remainder of the weekend deal.

GAME OF THRONES
Crusader Kings 2 Total Conversion Mods
Crusader Kings 2: A Game of Thrones
The mod takes its name from the first book in the series, as well as the “game” of plots and politics the ambitious and hopeful are said to be playing in their struggles for supremacy. Currently players are able to choose to play from any start date in the 300 years from before the Aegon's Conquest to the beginning of the fourth book (A Feast for Crows).
Built from the ground up with acute world detail and a focus on Westeros Unlike the AGOT mod, TSK lacks a considerable amount of development and singleplayer content, so we suggest players check out their mod first if they're looking for a rich and unrivaled singleplayer experience (and one that includes all of Essos too!).
THE LORD OF THE RINGS
